Balancing the Chi

Yin and Yang are fundamental to Chinese philosophy and to feng shui. We are familiar with the Yin/Yang symbol.

Yin is female, the earth, dark, water, death and cold
Yang is male, heaven, light, fire, life and warmth.

Through the interaction of yin and yang or simply negative and positive, the 5 types of chi are produced. From the 5 types of chi everything is produced.

The 5 types are sometimes referred to as elements. This is a little misleading. The 5 types of chi are in fact symbolic, descriptive terms that help us to understand the nature of the different types of chi.

The 5 types of chi are associated with the seasons, compass directions, shapes, colours and properties.

Water: North, Winter, wavy, dark blue or black. It flows downwards and represents wisdom and love

Wood: East, Spring, long rod/beam, green. It is expansive, growing upwards and represents life.

Fire: South, Summer, triangular, red , purple and orange. It is radiant and spreads and represents emotion.

Earth: Centre, Between seasons, square, yellow and brown. It is receptive and represents conservation.

Metal: West Autumn, circular, white, gold and silver. It is sharp, pointing inwards and represents solitude.
